A reminder that the Society is asking for submissions for its contribution to next year’s Modern Language Association Convention to be held in New Orleans in January 2025. The Samuel Beckett Society has proposed three panels for the convention:

Title: Samuel Beckett and Persistent Impoverishment

We welcome 250-word abstracts on the topic of poverty relating to Beckett’s writing: the condition of his unhoused protagonists, the impoverishment of meaning in his texts; the performance of his plays in precarious circumstances, etc.

Title: Samuel Beckett and the Arresting Image

How does visibility inform the aesthetics and politics of Beckett’s writing? We welcome 250-word abstracts on the role of visual culture in his writing; the implication of power with visibility, inspection, surveillance, and the gaze.

Title: Beckett, Justice, and Social Action

How can Beckett’s writing be understood in relation to the pursuit of justice and the practice of social action? We welcome 250-word abstracts opening new lines of inquiry into the social impact of his work.

The submission deadline for all three panels is Monday, 18 March 2024. Abstracts should be forwarded to this address.
