The 9th Annual Conference of the Samuel Beckett Society, Beckett and Justice, will take
place at the campus of California State University, Los Angeles from the 6-8 June 2024. The
event will consist of formal academic papers, roundtable discussions and theatrical events
which will connect to a longstanding history of Beckett’s personal resistance and resilience in
the face of tyranny and censorship, his direct engagement with the incarcerated, and the
critical role which his works have played in social activism. A group of more than thirty
scholars from more than a dozen countries will present on broad range of topics as they
relate to the Nobel Prize-winning Irish author’s engagement with all aspects of justice in its
widest sense.
The conference will include the announcement of the winners of the Samuel Beckett Society
Writing Contest, limited to those who are currently incarcerated, for the best written response
to the play Waiting for Godot. There will also be a performance of Happy Days at the
Independent Shakespeare Co., staring Monica Horan and Tim Durkin, as well as a Cal State
LA student workshop performance of Beckett short plays. There will also be a public
interview with LA based Thai artist Saun Santipreecha and a visit to his Beckett-inspired
show which will run at the Taylor-Reisig Gallery.
