Our Mission Statement

The Samuel Beckett Society is a collective dedicated to the continuing study, appreciation, and illumination of the life and works of Nobel Laureate Samuel Beckett. We pursue our mission through several related objectives:

  • Fostering a vibrant global community of Beckett enthusiasts.
  • Facilitating scholarly and educational exchange in the spirit of free inquiry.
  • Supporting the professional development of Beckett scholars and translators.
  • Promoting artistic activity related to Beckett’s life and work.
  • Reporting on publications, productions, and other Beckett-related events.
  • Preserving Beckett’s literary legacy for current and future generations.

Meeting these objectives involves: organizing conferences, panel sessions, performances, and online forums; providing travel funding and other support for attendance at our events; connecting with researchers, artists, translators, theatre professionals, and interested amateurs via social media and direct communication; maintaining a website with an active newsfeed; and publishing a biannual review for our members.

Our Code of Conduct

The Samuel Beckett Society seeks to sustain a safe and supportive environment for all our members. In this effort, the Executive Board has created the following code of conduct, which applies to any participant in a society-sponsored or -sanctioned event.

Respectful, professional, and inclusive modes of speech and behavior are encouraged at all times. The following forms of conduct are prohibited:

  • Intimidating, harassing, abusive, derogatory, or demeaning speech or behavior.
  • Discriminatory comments or actions that diminish others, foment general hostility, or otherwise undermine professional equity.
  • Physical assault, as well as any real or implied threat of physical harm.
  • Sexual misconduct, including unwelcome sexual attention, stalking (physical or virtual), and unsolicited physical contact.

Infractions should be reported to a member of the Executive Board, who will collaborate with other board members to resolve disputes and ensure impartial resolutions while maintaining respect for all parties involved. Once reviewed, infractions against the Code of Conduct may result in suspension or revocation of Society membership.

The Executive Board will periodically review and update the Code of Conduct as needed to reflect changes in our membership, activities, and other circumstances.

Donate

The Samuel Beckett Society is a wholly voluntary organization dependent on its membership to administer and fund its work. This includes assisting early career scholars with their development by the awarding of travel bursaries to the annual conference, as well as maintaining The Beckett Circle and social media presence. Members have always been generous in their assistance. We would ask those of you who might be able, to consider about making a donation to aid the work.
