The Samuel Beckett Society is delighted to announce an essay competition for 2024 aimed solely at incarcerated persons in prisons and correctional institutions. Organised by Dr Katherine Weiss of California State University, Los Angeles, to coincide with 2024’s Samuel Beckett Society Annual Conference Beckett and Justice, the competition is inviting essay responses and creative responses (such as poems, short stories or dramatic scenes) to Waiting for Godot or any of Beckett’s literary works. The winner of the competition will receive a prize of $500 and their work will be presented at next year’s conference in Los Angeles. The winning entry will also be published in The Beckett Circle.

In order to maximise participation in this exciting initiative, the Society is asking scholars from around the world to consider contacting their local prison education and creative writing programmes to publicize the competition.

Full details are contained in the attached flyer.
