The death has been announced of Anne Atik, author and close friend of Samuel Beckett’s. Along with her husband, the painter Avigdor Arikha and her two daughters, Alba and Noga, the family were frequent hosts to Beckett in their home in Paris. Her book How It Was: A Memoir of Samuel Beckett (1991) recounts the relationship with diary entries, letters and personal photographs, providing an intimate account of their friendship. The Samuel Beckett Society offers its deepest sympathy to Alba and Noga on their lost. May she rest in peace.
Masthead portrait by Avigdor Arikha.
Avigdor and Anne have been great friends of ours in the 80th and 90th. I deeply feel their loss, Avigdor’s first
and now Anne’s. I have know Alba and Noga. Alba in one of her books remembers the Bellews. Noga won’t. She is younger. To them both all my warmest feelings. My husband, Peter and I have often been with them. Among my strongest and
dearest memories.
Love to the family
