The editors of New Voices in Beckett Studies/ Nouvelles Voix dans les études beckettiennes, propose a special issue of Samuel Beckett Today/ Aujourd’hui, aimed at new and emerging scholars in the broadest meaning of the term. The volume will interrogate the concept of ‘newness’ in Beckett via a collation and celebration of new voices in the field, innovative ‘new’ methodologies, and ‘new’ readings or redressing of extant knowledge on Beckett’s life and work. As the call states ‘our understanding of the word ‘new’ is necessarily open and adaptive; encompassing both the scholar and the scholarly output’. They welcome papers on any aspect of Beckett Studies, broadly conceived, and from any disciplinary perspective, but are explicitly inviting submissions solely from authors who identify as: current and former postgraduates, early career, independent, contingent, precarious, and/ or minoritized scholars, graduates who no longer work within the field of academia.’

Editors Julie Bates, Dúnlaith Bird, Georgina Nugent, and Feargal Whelan write: ‘we particularly welcome work from scholars who consider themselves ‘new’ to academia, members of groups historically excluded from academia, new to the study of modernism and/or Beckett Studies, as well as those working to give voice to new approaches and methods to the study of Beckett’s life and work. Whether you are an early career, independent, contingent, precarious, or minoritized scholar, and whether your work in Beckett Studies is academic, public-facing, creative, or something you had left behind, we welcome your submission. Collaborative work is also very welcome.’

The closing date for abstracts is 15 January 2027. Full submission details and call for papers in English and French below.
