This September sees the opening of an exhibition, lecture series and public performances marking Samuel Beckett’s long-standing and important engagement with Germany, the German language and German culture. The event takes its title ‘The German Room’ from the early story ‘Dante and the Lobster’, where – after describing the location of the “French room” in the language academy – we are told: ‘God knows where the German room was.’ The exhibition imagines and presents Beckett’s “German Room” to the public, inviting visitors to familiarise themselves with – and to learn to read – the many dimensions of the ‘German Beckett’.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an academic programme curated by Dr Georgina Nugent of University College Cork and will feature lectures by Dr James Little and Dr Adriaan van der Weel, as well as Dr Nugent herself. There will also be an accompanying cultural programme featuring concerts, film screenings and public discussions. The exhibition is organised by the library of the University of Regensburg in cooperation with the Tophoven Archive in Straelen and the Beckett Archive at the University of Reading.

Among the associated events is Ghost Trio/Geistertrio, Beckett/Beethoven, a film presentation with musical accompaniment by a piano trio from the Regensburg University Orchestra, which will take place on 13 November. Full details here.

The exhibition opens with the academic lectures on 22 September 2025 at der Universitätsbibliothek, Universität Regensburg. Registration must be made by 31 August at this address.

  1. To Whom It May Concern

    Thanks for the information.

Do you know how accessible the exhibition will be to a non German speaking visitor?

I attended the recent Beckett exhibition in Stuttgart which was completely bilingual. I am not expecting the same level of accessibility but would like to attend.

Will any of the content be presented in English.

    Kind regards

    Fred Haynes

    1. Dear Fred,

The three academic talks will be in English and although the exhibition does not specifically state so, it would appear that there is a keenness to attract as wide an audience as possible.
