Titled ‘Beckett in Babylon’ and billed as ‘an unprecedented three-day programme that shines a light on Samuel Beckett’s work in Germany’, a fascinating short festival will take place at the historic Babylon Kino in Berlin, presented by The Embassy of Ireland.
A major highlight will include big-screen presentations of Beckett’s pioneering television plays created between 1966 and 1986 at Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) in Stuttgart. There will also be a screening of If I Fall, Don’t Pick me up, the 2024 documentary by Irish director Declan Clarke which examines the relationship between Beckett and German director and friend Walter Asmus, which will be followed by an audience Q&A. Asmus will also appear in a public conversation with Beckett’s German Diaries editor, Mark Nixon, who will also present a separate talk titled ‘German Fever’: Beckett and Germany.
