The death has taken place of Michael Gambon, the well-known screen and stage actor. Born in Dublin in 1940, making his professional debut in the city’s Gate Theatre at the age of 24, Gambon took part in a number of significant Beckett productions over the years.

In 2006, he was directed by Atom Egoyan in a remarkable stage production of Eh Joe at the Duke of York’s Theatre in London and at Dublin’s Gate, while also taking the part of Henry in a BBC radio production of Embers the same year. In 2010, again at the Gate, Gambon produced a remarkable performance as Krapp in Krapp’s Last Tape, directed by Michael Colgan, and in 2012, he played Dan in a staged version of All that Fall directed by Trevor Nunn at Jermyn Street Theatre, London. He will also be remembered for his Hamm in Endgame, directed by Conor McPherson for the Beckett on Film project.
